Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the country has developed rapidly. It is also playing a more important role on the global stage. Let’s take a look at some of the great achievements China has made, and find out more in the following pages.
Ø Economy and trade 经济与贸易
GDP is a measure (衡量指标) of economic performance. It is the value of everything produced within a country. Over the past 70 years, China’s GDP growth has surprised the world. In 1952, China’s GDP was $30 billion, while last year it reached $13.61 trillion (万亿). In 1978, the country’s GDP ranked 11th in the world, while in 2010, it rose to second-highest in the world.
In 2001, China became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Since then, the country has played a more active role in global trade. China has started to make and sell more goods to other countries, as well as buy more products from them.
Ø Belt and Road Initiative “一带一路”倡议
During his visits to Central and Southeast Asia in 2013, President Xi Jinping brought up the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It aims to improve infrastructure, trade and people-to-people communications between Asia, Europe and Africa. The initiative has attracted more than 100 countries and international organizations.
Ø Poverty reduction 扶贫工作
In recent decades, China has made great efforts to fight poverty and has become a role model in this area. The Chinese government hopes to lift all Chinese people out of poverty by 2020. Right now, more than 700 million Chinese have been lifted out of poverty. To help the poor, the Chinese government has done a lot of work, including building roads, providing better education and improving healthcare policies.
Ø Olympic dreams 奥运梦
Pride, perseverance and patriotism ( 爱 国 精 神 ) have turned China from a “sleeping dragon” to a global sports superpower. Many Chinese athletes have become famous internationally, such as Yao Ming, Liu Xiang and Li Na. The country also promotes the National Fitness Program to improve the health of all citizens. It has built a large number of public sports facilities and organized many different kinds of sports events. The country hosted the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. And Beijing is expecting greater glory at the 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the first city to host both versions of the Olympics.
